Friday 25th January marked the first Women in Motor Sport themed CAMS Awards Evening with over 100 motor sport competitors, officials, suppliers and supporters turning out to recognise the 2012 Champions of Queensland.
Acknowledging the contributions made by women in all facets of the sport, on and off track, MC Wes Beadman invited Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) Committee member Samantha Reid to the stage to award Certificates of Recognition to five outstanding women and are an example of CAMS and WAMS desire to encourage more women to get involved in the sport of motor racing and highlight some of the great contributions women have and are already making to the sport. WAMS would like to offer their sincere congratulations and appreciation to all award winners: Margot Knowles, Sheridan Hetherman, Judy (Mouse) Evans, Janelle Svenson and Susan Brook. Following the awards presentation, special guests, Renee Gracie (Carerra Cup Driver), Kobe Webb (CEO Tekno Autosports) and Sarah Harley (Driver, radio host and avid WAMS supporter) joined Margot and Judy on stage for a Q&A session. Judy shared her experience as a women starting out where she was not allowed to be in the pits at all. Even as a female driver competing she was asked to immediately leave the pit area on completion of her event. Now some 30 years later, Judy thoroughly enjoys any official role IN the Pits. A very special mention went out to Mary Caplet who received a 2012 Service Award and John Preston who took out the most prestigious award of the night The Motor Sport Official of the Year. WAMS would like to congratulate all of the 2012 award winners and wish everyone a strong, safe and successful 2013 season.
