Caitlin Wood and Tyra Maranik will be recommended by Australia to the FIA’s Women in Motorsport Commission as candidates in the 2013 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Evaluation Day.
The WAMS committee, headed by WMC delegate Belinda Taylor, was thrilled to receive high calibre applicants for this fantastic opportunity supported by Volkswagen. After carefully considering each application, the committee narrowed it down to current WAMS Scholarship holder Caitlin Wood and young karter Tyra Maranik who earlier this year attended the Australian Motor Sport Foundation’s Elite Driver Development Camp held at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Wood, age 16, knows what the evaluation events are all about having attended one in Geneva in 2010 and only narrowly missing out on a full season in the 2011 CIK FIA Karting Academy Trophy series. The young gun was the third fastest girl at the event and would be looking to step it up should she get the opportunity to attend the 2013 Scirocco R-Cup Evaluation event.
“I learnt a lot from the experience in Geneva,” said Wood. “This year I’ve stepped up to Formula Ford and it’s been a massive learning curve but I’m really enjoying it and I’m sure I would learn a lot from attending this event in Germany.”
Also 16, Tyra Maranik started her karting career later than most but has shown she has plenty of speed and ability to hold her own. The level-headed teenager is yet to transition to cars and feels that working with Volkswagen in the Scirocco R-Cup would be the perfect way to do it.
“I am really excited to be nominated by WAMS and I’m sure I would learn a lot if I get chosen to go to the evaluation day,” said Maranik. “My aim is to get into a competitive series overseas and I think the Scirocco R-Cup would be a great first step for me.”
The WMC now has the challenging task of considering nominations from national sporting authorities around the globe before selecting 10-12 of the world’s best to attend the Evaluation Event scheduled for the 7th and 8th of November in Oschersleben, Germany.
The WAMS Committee wishes both girls the best of luck through the next phase of the selection process and would like to thank all the applicants who applied for the opportunity.
